How to add volume to lifeless, flat hair
I have annoyingly flat hair, and I’m not afraid to admit it. It doesn’t matter if I blow-dry it or use a special plaiting technique, it rarely works. I’m left with horrible, flat hair that looks lifeless, which you can see on the right. Are you a
fellow flat-head? Okay, that nickname really needs work, but we’re all in the same boat here. However, I’ve recently discovered a few holy grail products that I thought I’d share, just to help those seeking fabulous volume waves out.
Rather than blow-drying your hair, let it air dry at night. When it’s half dry, spray Trevor Sorbie’s Salt Texture Spray throughout it, scrunching it between your hands for a few seconds each time. This will automatically add texture and wave to your hair. You can then blow dry
it if you prefer or don’t have time to air dry, but I prefer to let it naturally dry.
When it’s finished drying, tie all your hair back into a semi-loose bun. Make sure it isn’t super tight nor loose – this can be achieved by pulling out the bun messily when it’s put up tight. You can then go ahead and do your makeup, as it’ll add heat-free curl and volume to it straight away. When you’ve finished getting ready, take your hair down and spray some dry shampoo on it. While dry shampoo is normally used for oily or greasy hair, it actually adds major volume to clean hair and is my biggest tip. Don’t spray it all over, but rather just at the top of the hair. Flip your head over and spray it on the roots at the back of your head – I did this on a whim and noticed that when I whipped my hair back to normal, it looked even better. Run your hands through to make sure any visible product is dispersed. I personally recommend Batiste’s Heavenly Volume dry shampoo plus, as it’s simply the best
I’ve tried. On the right, you can see my hair after using just this dry shampoo technique, which is so much better than the original picture.
Next, take a curling wand and add a few curls to the waves that should already be in your hair. You don’t have to do your entire head, but instead choose pieces to make your hair look less flat. It gives it a messy look
that’s far from flat. I love Remington’s CI96W1 Silk Curling Wand for this, as the curls last all day and it’s inexpensive.
Finally, lift sections of hair to spray hairspray onto the scalp. I use Tresemme’s Freeze Hold Hairspray, which lasts all day and is a nice final touch. Give it a quick shake and you should end up with something like the photo shown! I’ve added a small plait to the side of my hair just as a little extra, secured with a bobby pin.
