How to get those nails growing

Whether it's acrylic or gel, we all love getting our nails done at the salon - but do we really know what happens to our nails when we haven’t been taking proper care of them?

Weak and unhealthy nails are often due to negligence and improper care. You will be able to tell whether your nails are healthy or not, as healthy nails are smooth, without puts or grooves, they are also uniform in colour and consistency. Unhealthy nails become weak, are prone to breaking and do not grow easily. They may also have signs of yellowing and discoloration.

Don't worry though, there are some simple remedies that can get your nails back to health. A healthy lifestyle, dietary changes, a proper nail care regimen and some simple home remedies can help fix the problem.

1. Olive oil

Olive oil is an excellent remedy for weak nails. The oil helps moisturise the nails. It also helps repair damage and softens nails and cuticles which then leads to strong and healthy nails. Massage your nails thoroughly with some warm olive oil, covering both the top and underside of your nails. Wait 15 minutes, then wash it off with water, you can do this two or three times daily.

2. Green tea

Green tea can also make your nails grow strong and healthy. The antioxidants in green tea help prevent brittle nails as well as strengthening them. As well as this, the green tea helps get rid of yellow discolouring. Brew a cup of green tea and allow it to cool. Soak your nails in it for 10 to 15 minutes; you can do this twice a week.

3. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is another versatile ingredient that can repair and strengthen damaged nails. Its antiseptic property helps prevent and treat fungal infection that can cause your nails to become weak and brittle. Put a few drops of tea tree oil in a small bowl of warm water. Soak your nails in this solution for three minutes, a few times a week.

4. Flaxseed oil

The micronutrients in flaxseeds, such as vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, lecithin, zinc and protein are necessary for nail health. Rub some flaxseed oil on your nails and massage gently for a few minutes before going to bed, where you should wear gloves to retain the moisture.

5. Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E oil is another good remedy to keep your nails looking strong and healthy. Its moisturising properties help to keep your nails looking healthy and hydrated. You can use vitamin E oil on your nails by massaging gently onto them for a few minutes. You should do this daily for a few weeks before going to bed.

6. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can also be used to keep your nails strong as its acidic nature can prevent and treat nail fungus. Mix equal amounts of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and water into a small bowl. Soak your nails in this solution for five to ten minutes once a day for a few weeks.

These are the remedies you can try and use to keep healthy looking nails, all of these are easily accessible from your local supermarket so why not go and give them try!
